Statement from the Mayor – January 2021

When I took office at short notice in the middle of 2020, we were in the early stages of the COVID 19 Pandemic.  Since then we all know how it has developed and I hope that now in early 2021 with vaccines being delivered we may be able to return to some normality during 2021 and look forward to some of the events Adlington is associated with, particularly the Carnival. In the meantime we can only follow guidance and do our best to keep ourselves, loved ones and the wider public we come into contact with as safe as we can.

The Council have worked hard in 2020, with the limited resources we have, and are very pleased with the outcome of the ‘Light Adlington’ initiative over Christmas.  It brightened the town during the dark nights of December when we all needed a boost.  We will review this and look at running it again in 2021.  We have also engaged with LW Storehouse, Chorley, to provide food parcels for families with children of school or nursey age in our area, who are struggling.

Light Adlington Christmas 2021

We are now asking all residents to join us in December and help us to “Light Adlington” on every road and street in the village by lighting up a door or window of your house that faces the front of your property for all your neighbours and friends to see.

Be as creative as you can … Unite forces with your neighbours and create a theme or be as individual as you like… we hope you will all take part. To read the full poster click here.

Vacancies for two Town Councillors

Following the mid-term resignation of two Town Councillors and in line with the provisions of Section 87(2) of the Local Government Act, Adlington Town Council wants to appoint by co-option a Councillor for each of the North and West Wards in the village to serve until the next local election in May 2023. Civic Sunday

On Sunday 12 September 2021 Adlington Town Mayor, Kevin O’Donnell, and ATC Councillors, hosted Civic  Sunday at St Pauls Church and afterwards at St Paul’s club. It is a tradition going back many years and usually held in June.

Thank you to everyone involved in the organisation of the event, but especially to St Pauls Church, the visiting vicar, Fr David Sutton, and the wardens for organising a beautiful church service which was accompanied by the Rivington & Adlington Brass Band who sounded wonderful on arrival and within the church. The service ended with the national anthem and Jerusalem.

Visiting dignitaries included Councillors from Blackrod, Horwich, Heath Charnock, and Anderton. Deputy Mayor of Horwich Cllr Steven Chadwick, Deputy Mayoress of Horwich Kath Hodson, Deputy Mayor of Blackrod Cllr Susan Baines and the Deputy Mayor of Blackrod’s Consort Cllr Michael Baines.

The Adlington Town Council Civic awards for 2020 and 2021 were presented in the club after the church service. These are awarded to residents of Adlington who have been nominated by someone in the community for something they have done, in or for the community, and contribute to our society and help make Adlington a lovely place to live.

2020 – Community Service awards from last year

Alison Evans
For her services to Adlington Town Council for six years, including a year as Mayor. Work as Adlington Scout group leader and Ranger Leader. She has played a major part in the campaign to save Adlington Library as Chair of Friends of Adlington Library (FOAL).

Florence Molyneaux
Services to Adlington Town Council for 36 years, and also on Chorley Council. Florence has represented Adlington Town Council on various outside organisations over many years.  She is a great example of community service and spirit to us all.

Natalie Kerr
Natalie’s award is for services to organ donation awareness and the associated community and fundraising work.

Lois Birtwistle
For the inspiration and energy which Lois has brought for many years for the planning and organisation of Adlington Carnival.

Stephen Higgins Young Person Award 2020
This is given to young people who have made an outstanding achievement through their actions

Amelia Thompson

Amelia has been a very active member of the community giving her time to help others as a Young Leader at Rainbows and Brownies, an active member of the Guides, and the new Ranger Group, as well as volunteering with residents at Grove House, and working with younger children at dance classes.

2021 Community Service Awards

Lucy Lees
Lucy is a specialist nurse and at the start of the pandemic she was nursing Covid-19 patients. Where Lucy has struck a chord locally is what she has done to support others in the community and maintain community spirit in her neighbourhood during the pandemic. Lucy’s house has been nicknamed the ‘Happy House’ due to the window displays she has put up during the pandemic which has raised local peoples’ spirits. Lucy was involved with Easter egg displays in over 80 households earlier this year. She is a wonderful member of the community and offered help and comfort to those who were finding life difficult during the lockdowns.

Anderton Day Nursery and Fairview Cleaners
Two local businesses have made their own unique contributions to support front line key, and essential workers, families, the local community, and individuals in Adlington and District during the pandemic.

Fairview Cleaners represented by Annie Lilley and Sharon Booth
They have gone above and beyond what might be expected in the last year, through a variety of activities to help local residents, schools, and local charities as part of its Community Care programme. Among the services they have offered were five free service washes per day to NHS staff, plus a number of initiatives to help and support local residents, including collecting and delivering to customers who were isolating their shopping, prescriptions, and lots more. They have been a shining example of a local business supporting local people.

Anderton Day Nursery represented by Jenny Almond and Tracey Gilbertson
The nursery did their utmost to support children of key worker parents, and those in essential roles so they were able to continue with their jobs during the pandemic and lockdowns, knowing their children were being cared for.

Congratulations to everyone concerned, well done, and keep doing what you have done. These are all wonderful representatives of our community.  Thank you from everyone at Adlington Town Council.

 

Stephen Higgins Young Person Award 2021

Milly and Sally Cornes – this year the award is joint  for a special reason

In the early days of her illness Sally inspired people with her insightful blog about her treatment. Sally and Milly made uplifting and encouraging videos sharing Sally’s experience so people across the world could see them displaying grace, determination, and resilience throughout her illness.

Sadly Sally passed away on 9 February this year.

Milly gave her sister continual support, showing great sisterly spirit as they organised fund raising for cancer charities, and raising the awareness of Ewing’s Sarcoma whilst going through a very difficult time. Milly has since started the @Sallycancer Foundation to ensure Sally’s name is never forgotten and to help others in similar situations. What they did together is truly inspiring to everyone.

Adlington Town Council Litter Pick and Skip Day

Adlington Town Council supported by Adlington & District in Bloom will be holding a litter pick on Saturday 22nd May 2021. The Litter Pick will take place from 09:30 am to 11:30 am starting at the Jubilee Recreation Ground entrance and Adlington Library. The Skip is supplied by courtesy of Jigsaw Housing and will be located at the small car park at the far end of Windsor Avenue (near the Park Road / Windsor Avenue junction). Adlington Town Council supported by Adlington & District in Bloom will be holding a litter pick on Saturday 22nd May 2021. We need Adlington Litter Picking Heroes to come along and join us to help improve our environment, a couple of hours can make a huge difference. Full details of assembly points and provision of equipment to follow.
